At Marketianguis, we believe in the deep connection between history, culture, and identity. We are excited to share the fascinating story behind our logo, which is inspired by the emblematic Chalco Disk.
What is the Chalco Disk?
The Chalco Disk is a pre-Hispanic artifact of great significance in Mesoamerican history. It is located in the Mexica Room of the National Museum of Anthropology and is an impressive cylindrical basalt sculpture, measuring 102.5 cm in diameter and only 20 cm in thickness. Discovered in the Chalco region of present-day Mexico, this disk dates back to the time of the cultures that flourished in the Valley of Mexico, such as the Mexicas.
Design and Symbolism
On its main face, the Chalco Disk features an intricate design carved in bas-relief. From the center outwards, you can observe a central circle, a small ring, six cut trapezoids separated by six bars, a large ring, 28 smooth circles, and finally, eight sets of four bars arranged radially around the edge of the piece. Each of these elements serves a specific purpose and carries symbolic meaning, representing a complex view of the cosmos and natural forces.
In addition to its rich symbolism, the Chalco Disk also served a practical function in Mexica society. It was used to indicate the location of tianguis, or open-air markets, known as Tianquinztli. These markets were crucial to the economic and social life of the time, and the disk served as an essential reference point for their location.
Our Inspiration
In designing our logo, we wanted to capture the essence of the Chalco Disk, an emblem of cultural richness and Mesoamerican heritage. Every element of our logo is inspired by the patterns and shapes of the disk, aiming to reflect not only the aesthetic of the artifact but also its deep meanings. Like the Chalco Disk, our logo represents the connection between tradition and innovation, between history and the future.
The Mexican Pink Color
To further highlight our connection to Mexico’s cultural richness, we have chosen a distinctive color for our logo: Mexican Pink. This color, is one of the most traditional colors used in Mexican crafts and folklore. Mexican Pink not only adds vibrant vitality to our logo but also evokes the essence of our traditions and the festive spirit of our culture.
Why Marketianguis?
The name "Marketianguis" derives from the fusion of two special words that represent the essence of our store:
- Market: This English word refers to a physical or virtual space where all kinds of products are marketed and promoted.
- Tianguis: This Mexican word, originating from the Nahuatl term "Tianquiz(tli)," means market. These markets are magical, lively places where artisans and farmers gather to offer their crafts, food, and a wide variety of products to the local community.
When you combine "Market" with "Tianguis," you get "Marketianguis," a name that conveys the idea of a global market full of unique treasures and handmade items made with love from around the world. We hope you like the story behind the name of our store!
